EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND

Born in Amodu Eleoha Ututu Arochukwu (Abia State, Nigeria), Okeke Kanu James (real name) is the last born of seven children of a peasant farmer and industrious petty trading mother. Kanu discovered his penchant for entertaining, at a very tender age of 8.

Growing up, he listened to a lot of songs by P.square, and he knew he was going to become an artiste someday. As a result, he began to look out for a name that would suit his brand. Initially, he was known as Don Kay but that changed when the Master of Ceremonies at a function where he performed introduced him as Kayflex but fans choose to call him Kay Baba . It sounded very good and he decided to adopt the name Kayflex Baba.

Growing up was tough, Kanu recalled. His elder siblings had to put in a lot of efforts through menial JOBS to augment the meagre incomes of their parents. Kanu’s performances continued to attract attention.

According to him growing up was very tough. They were not rich and they were not poor. His siblings and him had to hustle.

As an Igbo boy, he didn’t depend on anybody because he believes that if you must eat, you must work. As a child, there were other things he did to help himselfself like; blogging dancing, writing songs to people and lot more to help him sustain &  keep active.

He often sneaks out from home at odd hours in search of shows to perform at or going to the studio. Clearly, nothing was going to stand in his way! Many years later, as a teenager, he longed for the limelight to showcase his many talents. He was featured in some minor underground artistes as a backup singer, but the momentum was soon lost he realised that he was completely cut off from entertainment opportunities. Independence was better known for its huge rice mill. So, back to feet he went. This time, he was more determined to succeed on his own.

He combed Lagos for shows with fervour. At a point in shows, he would approach promoters & dj’s with his demo cd and even begged to perform.

 CAREER AND LIFE

After he completed his secondary school education in 20014. Unfortunately he couldn’t move further in his education due to the death of his parents. He looked up to people who love his music. Since then, he’s been trying to understand the music business.

He released his first single “Onyedikagi”, he didn’t get the attention he was expecting until he dropped a song title “Gimme Love (Apology’s Song)” in July 2017 and the song became a bigger hit in that year.

SPEAKING ABOUT HIS CHALLENGES

It has been money. Not signed on with a record label & things don’t usually go the way you planned it. It is not easy for you to convince someone to invest in your career. If I had the money, I won’t have a reason go after a record label. Another challenge is having the right team who would advise you on what type of songs to sing and when to release them into the market or media platforms. Fans could also pose a challenge because not all of them would like your songs, he recalled.
